Travel Advice

Travel Insurance for East Africa

Before embarking on your holiday in East Africa, it’s essential to secure comprehensive travel insurance. This should cover all potential medical emergencies, including illnesses and accidents, and must include specific activities you plan to do, such as gorilla tracking, white-water rafting, and wildlife safaris.

  • Medical Evacuation: Ensure your policy covers medical evacuation, particularly if you’re visiting remote areas where healthcare facilities might be limited. Medical evacuation ensures you’ll be transported to a facility that can provide appropriate treatment, should the need arise.

  • Adventure Sports Coverage: Many safari and outdoor activities such as mountain climbing, kayaking, and quad biking may be considered high-risk by insurers. Make sure your travel insurance explicitly covers these adventure activities to avoid any unexpected expenses.

  • Car Rental Insurance: If you’re planning to rent a car in Uganda, opt for comprehensive car insurance that covers all potential damages to the vehicle. Uganda’s roads, particularly in national parks or rural areas, can be challenging, so make sure you’re protected against accidents, theft, and natural damage (e.g., flooding or wildlife-related incidents).

Visa Information for Uganda

Most travelers visiting Uganda will need to apply for a visa, except for citizens of certain visa-exempt African countries. Uganda no longer offers visa-on-arrival, meaning you must apply for an e-Visa online prior to your trip.

How to Apply for a Ugandan Visa:

  1. Visit the official Ugandan immigration website: Uganda e-Visa Application.
  2. Complete the online application form, which will ask for personal details, travel information, and accommodation details.
  3. Pay the visa fee using a credit or debit card. A single-entry visa costs US$50, while a six-month multiple-entry visa costs US$100.
  4. Once approved, print your e-visa approval to present upon arrival in Uganda.

East African Tourist Visa:

If you’re planning to visit Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda on the same trip, you can apply for the East African Tourist Visa. This multiple-entry visa is valid for 90 days and allows unlimited travel between the three countries for the duration of your stay.

  • Cost: US$100
  • Application: You can apply for this visa through any of the three countries’ immigration websites or consulates.

Visa Exempt Countries:

Visitors from Kenya, Rwanda, and a few other African nations do not need a visa to enter Uganda. However, it’s important to double-check Uganda’s visa-exemption list as policies may change.

What to Pack for Your Uganda Adventure

Packing for your trip to Uganda depends on the season, your planned activities, and the areas you’ll be visiting. Here are the essentials:

Clothing:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothes for day tours in the hot savannas and tropical forests.
  • Warm layers for chilly mornings and evenings, particularly in high-altitude areas such as Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mount Elgon.
  • Waterproof clothing and a rain jacket, especially if traveling during the rainy season (March to May, September to November).
  • Sturdy hiking boots for trekking (especially if you’re going gorilla tracking or hiking in national parks).
  • Insect-repellent clothing or long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect against mosquitoes, particularly in forested areas.

Safari and Adventure Gear:

  • Binoculars for bird watching and wildlife viewing.
  • A good-quality camera with a zoom lens to capture wildlife in the distance.
  • Backpack for day trips and safaris to carry essentials like water, snacks, and your camera.
  • Hat and sunglasses for protection from the sun during outdoor activities.

Health & Safety Essentials:

  • Sunscreen with a high SPF rating to protect against the equatorial sun.
  • Anti-malarial medication and insect repellent with DEET for protection against mosquitoes.
  • Reusable water bottle and water purification tablets if traveling to remote areas where clean drinking water might not be readily available.
  • Personal first-aid kit with essential medications, plasters, antiseptic cream, and any prescribed medication.

Documents & Miscellaneous:

  • Printed e-visa approval letter for immigration purposes.
  • Yellow Fever vaccination card (a requirement for entry into Uganda).
  • Travel itinerary, accommodation bookings, and important contact details.
  • A small amount of US dollars, as they are widely accepted in Uganda for visa fees, park fees, and tips.

Transport and Getting Around in Uganda

Uganda’s road network is decent but often involves long distances and rugged terrain when traveling between parks. Consider renting a 4×4 vehicle for more flexibility, especially if you plan to explore remote areas or national parks. It’s advisable to hire a local driver-guide, as Ugandan roads can be tricky to navigate, especially in rural or wilderness areas.

Alternatively, domestic flights are available between Entebbe and key tourist destinations like Kidepo Valley, Murchison Falls, Bwindi, and Queen Elizabeth National Park. This option is ideal for those looking to save time.

Best Time to Visit Uganda

Uganda is a year-round destination, but the best time for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities like gorilla tracking is during the dry seasons:

  • December to February
  • June to September

These months offer more predictable weather conditions, making it easier to track gorillas and other wildlife, as animals tend to gather around water sources in national parks. The wet seasons (March to May and September to November) can make roads and trekking trails muddy and difficult to navigate, but the landscapes are lush, and birdwatching is at its best.
